The Action Game (Bob Ciaffone, 1984, revised in 2001)
Starting Out
There are not many good omaha books (as of this writing at least), and one from M.Ciaffone, an experienced player, co-author of Pot Limit and No Limit Poker and Middle Limit Holdem, is bound to be interesting.
The first chapter contains general information about omaha: the rules, the origins, how to read the board… This introductory material is sixteen pages.
The second chapter deals with Strategy. It is about thiry pages, and made of short sections about various topics: playing two pairs, straight draws, how to select your starting hand… The advice is good, naturally, but unfortunately the sections are too short, and there are too few examples and practical analyses. This means the book gets you up to speed, but you are not armed yet with enough knowledge to really be competitive.
The remaining chapters deal with omaha high-low (aka omaha8), pot limit omaha and tournament play. The same remarks apply again: good material but too brief, and not enough practical hands.
Overall, this is a good book if you know nothing or very little about omaha. If you already have some practical knowledge and know your basics, this book won’t answer all your questions.
