Expert Strategy For No-Limit Tournaments (Dan Harrigton, Bille Robertie, 2005, 2+2 publishing)

They Did It Again

The first volume was already excellent, and the authors managed to keep up to the high standards with the second one.

This book deals with the later stages of tournament play, when the blinds and antes put a lot of pressure on the average stack, and when good short stack play can make the difference.

The second volume picks up where the previous one left, so the first part of the book is named Part Eight. It is devoted to moves; about fifty pages on bluffs, semi-bluffs, continuation bets, probe bets, squeeze play, slowplaying, check-raise bluffs, and many other plays. The information is very good, as usual, and will be food for thought for all readers. It is followed by another sixty pages of practical problems.

Part Nine explains the concept of inflection points - how to adapt your play to your stack size and the blinds and antes. This is something many tournament players learned either the hard way, from experience, or read about in the technical forums and newsgroups - but it had never been exposed this way in a book before. Needless to say, this is extremely valuable information. To say the truth, many players wish it were not so easily available.

The next part briefly discuss isolation play, calculating odds against all-ins, and how to assess positions.

Part Eleven deals with short-handed play, and Part twelve with heads-up play. Both are in-depth and accurate, features many examples, and give plenty of information to the player not used with these special forms.

This book is the “worthy successor” of the first volume. The inflection points and related strategies are not directly usable in ring games, but the short-handed and heads-up play certainly are. An excellent buy for all players.
